Approaching Death
A fifty-one-year-old widow in Oklahoma City was diagnosed with a terminal illness and told that she had just a year to live. She had saved up money during her life and decided that over her last year, she would spend as much as possible to find a year of happiness.
The local news got wind of her desire and reported on the story. It wasn’t long before she began hearing from people around the country, suggesting how she should spend her money. Some said a new car, others a new home. But she already had a beautiful house and a new car. Others suggested she travel for the year, but she had traveled extensively throughout her lifetime and that had not made her particularly happy. Some suggested that she blow her money on nightlife. “Live it up, party, and gamble it away — what have you got to lose?” She said that every time she gambled, she won, and she didn’t really enjoy it! According to this woman, none of the suggestions that she received were of any help.
How typical of people. What sets this woman apart from millions of Americans (and even Christian Americans) is her personal knowledge of her approaching death.
But then I think of Kathy Sterling. Kathy was a faithful Bridge member and a beautiful person. Last fall, Linda and I visited her in the hospital, just hours after she learned she had only a few days to live. Because of her cancer, she could barely talk. But she painfully scratched out many words of encouragement, focusing on us and not her. And she would not stop smiling, telling us she was looking forward to meeting Jesus in person. Linda and I left the hospital room in tears.
What a contrast between Kathy and the widow from Oklahoma City… as well as all those who were quick to give her suggestions. Jesus is the difference.
We are all dying. Most are trying to find happiness in places that will never pay off.
You can travel the world, buy houses and cars of your dreams, and party as you please, but you will not find lasting pleasure in any of those places. Fulfillment comes from fulfilling your purpose — knowing and living for your Creator. That comes by faith in Jesus’ death and resurrection.
“And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.’” — John 6:35
You’ve heard that money can’t buy happiness, and you know that old saying is true. But are you still trying to prove it wrong?
Live for Jesus — He is not only worthy, He is worthwhile.
