“Strength is a matter of the made-up mind.” – John Beecher
If you want to get anything done, you have to start with a decision to do it.
Imagine a pilot who is unwilling to commit to the air. He’s either a pilot who doesn’t fly, or a dead one. I know that as I’m speeding down a runway and I reach V1 speed, I’m committed to the air.
Unfortunately, many church people have never gotten off the ground spiritually. They have been sitting on the tarmac, gunning their engines and making noise but getting nowhere. They have been planning on it…meaning to, wanting to, trying to, going to, aiming to, hoping to. But tragedy of tragedies, they have never gotten off the ground.
Consider just a few Scriptures:
Deuteronomy 6:6 – “You must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these…”
Deuteronomy 11:18 – “Commit yourselves completely to these words of mine.”
Deuteronomy 30:20 – “Choose to love the Lord your God and to obey Him and commit yourself to Him…”
Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit your work to the Lord, and then your plans will succeed.”
Making commitments is not only Biblical, it’s vital for any kind of success.
A healthy marriage starts with a commitment. Buying a home for your family began when you signed a mortgage commitment. I made a commitment to come to this church to help turn it around 19 years ago. Some of you did what you never thought you could do…running a marathon…because you made the commitment.
Every dream come true, every celebration of victory, every trial endured began with a commitment. But on the other side, when there is no commitment, nothing ever happens.
The road to realized dreams and accomplished intentions has been left unpaved for lack of commitment.
One year ago, we all together as a church made our Hoist The Sail commitments. Some of you were not yet with us, but for those of us who were here…it was an awesome and joyous time.
If you missed it, please join us now! There's nothing like coming together in a shared mission and committing to it together that binds you with a team. If you call The Bridge home but haven’t yet committed to Hoist The Sail, jump on board with us this weekend!
For the rest of us, it’s good to revisit commitments. Energy and passion tend to leak over time. Let’s renew our promise together to faithfully follow through on what we told God we would do.
And maybe some of you are like me. Linda was blessed with an unexpected pay increase this past year, so we are increasing our commitment with what God has given us. Maybe the Lord is leading you to do the same!
Psalm 37:5 – “Commit your way unto the Lord, trust also in Him and He will bring it to pass.”
