All Things

There was a reason for our Hoist the Sail theme verse: “For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever” (Romans 11:36).

We know intuitively that everything we do as a church is to be pointed at God’s glory.

But is that true of your life in general?

After all, this was written to individual church members. Not just for all that the church does, but for you…and for everything that you do. Is that true for your life?

Are you a husband or wife for God’s glory? If all of your conversations, reactions, and disagreements have God’s glory in mind, it will change your marriage.

Are you that way in your dating life? All for God’s glory?

What about in your business? I just read this quote from Allister Begg: “The Christian may wish for prosperity in his business, but only inasmuch as it may help him to promote this—‘To him be glory forever.’” Are you seeking God’s glory in how you conduct your business? And what you do with His blessings on that business?

Are you seeking God’s glory at work? While everyone else is jockeying for position and playing politics with the higher-ups, are you seeking first God’s glory? That will impact all your interactions—from the water cooler to meetings, sales calls to contract negotiations. And it will change what you do with the paycheck you receive at the end of the week.

What about in your friendships and gatherings with friends, Christians and non-Christians? Are you looking for God to be glorified in your entertainment, enjoyment, and conversations…surface level as well as deep?

Is that the passion of your heart and soul?

Because everything you have came from Him and through Him. You have that spouse because He gave him/her to you. You have those kids because He blessed you with them. You have that job because He gave it to you. You have your skills and gifts because He created you with them, and gave you the experiences that have shaped you, and the resources you have. It’s all from Him.

Is it to Him…for Him?

It’s not until we get to that place that we can truly find joy and fulfillment from life. None of God’s gifts to us produce lasting joy until we find our fulfillment in that purpose—living to love and honor Him.

As a church, we all memorized that verse together, and many of us recited it every day at 11:36a for months. Now…let’s really live it. Let’s put it into practice in every aspect of our lives.
