When The Bible Is Uncomfortable
Some people reject Christianity because they claim there are immoral and unethical themes in the Bible. The two most common examples have to do with the status of women and condemnation of homosexuality. Let me first say that when it comes to both of these issues, though there is debate regarding the interpretation of the Scriptures cited, in my mind, the passages are pretty straightforward. And not politically correct. There’s not enough space here for me to address the rele

The Voice Inside Your Head
“My mom’s been gone for over ten years, but every time I make a decision I hear her voice in my head, approving or disapproving. It’s like I’m still living to please her." I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that statement with some variables. Sometimes it’s, “Dad.” Sometimes it a first boss, a teacher, even a pastor. But most of us have someone in mind who still affects our thinking in a powerful way. Someone who influenced us so much in our formative years that thoug

Fractured Relationships
I’ve heard it many times, “I feel like I’m in the middle of it. I love them both and it kills me to see them fighting.” Kids say that about parents. Women say it about sisters. Guys say it about friends. You probably have people in your life that have it in for each other and you care about both. Or maybe you are one of those who has animosity towards someone and you are dragging others into the grudge. Relational squabbles mattered enough to the Apostle Paul that he called a

UNFAIR!
It looked like a certainty. Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints were going back to the Super Bowl. But there was no call. Had there been an interference call, New Orleans would have had the ball on the 5 yard line with a new set of downs to run out the clock before kicking the field goal. This was clearly unfair. The Saints should have been in the Super Bowl. UNFAIR!So now what do you do if you are Sean Payton, Drew Brees, Tommylee Lewis, or our Momentum speaker, John McCan

Wouldn't You Want to be Warned?
Have you ever flashed your lights to warn oncoming traffic of a speed trap? I asked someone that question and he said, “I would never do that. I don’t think it’s ethical and possibly illegal.”“Have you ever appreciated it when someone did it for you, and you avoided a ticket?” He sheepishly admitted that he had.Recently a federal judge ruled, state and local laws that penalize a driver for flashing their lights to warn a driver of a speed trap, violate the first amendment rig

Ultimate Injustice
I’m not one to comment often on what is in the news. We try to give you all an escape from the week’s headlines. And some of the justice issues that many pastors become consumed with do not have clear-cut solutions. We think we should always be about solutions, and the Gospel is always the solution. So we focus on that. But once-in-a-while, there is something in the news that is so egregious and noteworthy, that we have to speak. None of us should be surprised by the New Yor

Snowblowers and Life Change
I had trouble with my snowblower this week. The first heavy snow came over the weekend, and in the middle of clearing the first round, the shear pin that connects the auger to the drive shaft broke. It’s designed to do that to protect the motor. It should be a simple job of pulling out the old pin and replacing it with a new one. But after being in place for the last 6-7 years, and because the pin is designed to shear, it’s a softer metal than the drive shaft. So the differen

How Much Faith Do You Need?
A big strong construction worker was sitting in my office with questions about faith and his eternal status. He said something like, “I don’t think I have a strong enough faith in Jesus to be saved.” I asked him how much faith he needed. “I don’t know. But it seems like more than I have.” “It’s not the strength of your faith that matters, it’s the object of your faith,” I responded. I then asked him how much faith he needed for the chair he was sitting in to hold him up. And
